Trillium Family Services Selected to Continue Providing Treatment for
Oregon's Children with the Most Severe Mental Illnesses

Oregon Department of Human Services Awards Latest Contract for Services

The State of Oregon has once again selected Trillium Family Services to care for children suffering with the most severe forms of mental illness.

Following a competitive process, Oregon's Department of Human Services announced in June it had awarded the latest contract for the Secure Children's Inpatient Program (SCIP) to Trillium, which has been the sole provider of these services since the Oregon State Hospital (OSH) closed its children's psychiatric unit in 2002.

Children in the program have been diagnosed with illnesses including severe depression, bipolar disorder, suicidal thoughts, and other conditions that present a danger to the child and those around them. Trillium has also provided the equivalent program for teenagers since OSH closed its adolescent unit in 2005.

"The SCIP psychiatrist and treatment team are truly amazing in their ability to improve the lives of some of the most ill children in the state," says Dr. Keith Cheng, Trillium's Medical Director. "It gives me great pleasure to see that they are recognized by being awarded a renewal of the current SCIP contract."

Dr. Cheng was recently chosen as "Child Psychiatrist of the Year" by the Oregon Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Before SCIP transitioned to Trillium, OSH clinicians periodically used mechanical and chemical restraints as interventions with children. Trillium has not used either of these practices since opening SCIP in 2002. In addition to eliminating the use of these invasive measures, Trillium offers non-locked calming rooms to help children practice self-relaxing skills in a quiet atmosphere.

"We are very happy to have once again been entrusted with providing care for these children," says Trillium's CEO and President, Kim Scott. "We believe that every child can thrive when they receive the right treatment and support."

The new contract was recently finalized and will be effective for five years.
