Trillium Family Services Opens New Young Adult Program in Albany
In October 2007, Trillium Family Services will open a new Young Adult Program in the historic Montieth district of Albany. The program, designed to help young adults ages 17 – 24 overcome the challenges associated with mental illness, is one of the first of its kind in the state of Oregon. The residential independent living program will feature group and individual skills enhancement, one-on-one support and guidance from professional staff, mental health services, recreation, life-skills training on topics such as budgeting and healthy cooking, as well as enrollment in educational and vocational programs. The ultimate goal will be for residents to function and thrive in the community while managing their on-going mental health needs.
According to Bob Nikkel, DHS Assistant Director for Addictions and Mental Health, young people with mental health disorders often do not transition well from the children’s mental health system to programs intended for adults. Trillium’s Young Adult Program will focus on the specific needs of older adolescents and young adults so that they can successfully navigate this major life change. Says Nikkel, "we believe age-appropriate support for this critical stage of transition will prove beneficial."

Residents will be referred for participation in this program through Trillium’s Secure Inpatient Program at the Children’s Farm Home in Corvallis, the Oregon State Hospital, Oregon State Psychiatric Residential Treatment Services, and Oregon Youth Authority facilities. Approval for program participation is through the State of Oregon Office of Addictions and Mental Health.
